BoredNomic I

I think the reason that a loophole was created so early, and that the game ended the way it did, was my fault.

I really do need to read things more carefully. To not let these kinds of things happen. I know it wasn't what Casey intended. A simple "A player may not reset themselves if they are already at Level 1" would have sufficed.

But of course, I didn't notice that until it was way too late. So, with BoredNomic II I'm really going to focus more on that.

New Initial Rules

I was looking at the Initial Rules, and wondering what I could add to make BoredNomic II fresh. Most of the things I thought up were too complicated to be added. They seemed more like things that the players should propose, not me. The only thing I did like was the idea of pawns for each player, so that one could look at the board and tell where everyone is without having to scroll through each square's description. So I implemented that.

A little change I made was the dates that updates would occur on. When I chose the dates [or rather, didn't change them] for BoredNomic I, I didn't really have my school schedule in mind. I wasn't really in my classes then yet, so it didn't occur to me. By moving the days forward, I won't have to update on a day I go to school, and since I typically work Sunday mornings, updating on Sunday was hard as well. The two days I have are days I don't go to class and don't usually work in the mornings. So it'll overall be less stressful to me. Also, I changed the wording to make the period days include the day of the update, and finally I also added the weekly e-mails.

Another idea I toyed with was the idea of Subgames. I had heard of other Nomics doing such things, but I realized that I really had no good way of implementing them. With things like Items, it's not hard to create a ruleset around them that decides when they can be used. The idea I had for subgames was really Mario Party-ish. Have mini-games that are played at certain times. But when are those times? I couldn't think of any way they would fit in. In addition, most of the sub-game ideas I had would take longer than 1 turn to complete. It just wouldn't work out in a Mario Party-ish way. So I canned the idea and will let the players do something with it if they want.

The Forum

I figured with how Nomopoly had a forum for players to interact, having one here might encourage more player interaction and add a new dynamic to the game.

But, who knows what it will do, really. I can only hope for the best.

Developer's Diary: Old Players, New Players

Old Players

I know it's only been one day, but for whatever reason I'm slightly worried about the fact so few of the past players have gotten back to me. I only have 3 players officially ready and signed up, and I think... only 2 others have expressed interest. One person I'm worried about is Jeff, who, in my opinion, was one of the better players in the game. I really hope I hear something from him, and the others, some time soon. Also, there are 2 people who are for certain not coming back. So how many of these remaining 8 are going to return?

New Players

I have a few friends who I'd like to see join, but so far none of them have expressed interest. In addition, I've set up that game of OMI in hopes I can get some OMIers to give this a shot. Who knows if that will amount to anything. I can only hope.

Developer's Diary - Thoughts on Proposals

Thoughts on Proposals

Week 1 - Proposal #3 - Accepted

Players can change their pawn's outfits once a week by changing the color scheme of the pawn image.

It's kind of funny that several people voted Yey on this one, and yet only the person who proposed it has ever made any use of it. I wonder if, with the board now having colors on it, if some people might change the white parts on their pawns to be transparent.

Week 1 - Proposal #4 - Accepted

... 5. A winning condition may not be used to win the game the turn after it was proposed.

I sometimes wonder whether this part of the proposal shouldn't be re-proposed, changing "turn" to "week". Or at least, change it to "A winning condition may not be used to win the game the turn after it is accepted into the rules."

Week 1 - Proposal #5 - Accepted

... KickBack ...

I really like KickBack. I wondered if, when the rules for Property Ownership came up, if a rule shouldn't have been made to make it unownable. It's kind of a moot point now, but. And then again, I guess it kind of makes it a little interesting.

Week 1 - Proposal #8 - Rejected and Week 2 - Proposal #10 - Accepted (Also: BoredNomic I - Week 5 - Proposal #31)

... Hot Potato ... and ... IT ...

I remember talking to PeanutButterToast on this one, helping her to flesh it out. She did get the idea for BN I's Proposal #31, and I gave her more ideas on what could be added to it. It did eventually get rejected, but it's strange then that not long after the original wattered down version of it would come to be accepted. I guess the exploding damage thing was just too much, huh? And, I do rather like the rules for things that the IT will have to deal with that are coming up in Week 3.

New Squares

For some reason, I really like the idea of new squares that have special properties when you land on them, like the Garden of Infinite Promise. I'm not sure what other new things could come out with them. Also, I wonder if there shouldn't be several new regular squares added, to have some more property on the board.

Developer's Diary - Stupid Proposal Ideas

Stupid Proposal Ideas

In this section, I'm going to list off a few ideas I've had for proposals. You're totally free to rip them off.

Stupid Proposal #1

Every week, The Admin will make one proposal. That proposal will be identical to any proposal found in BoredNomic I, Nomopoly I, or Nomopoly II. The proposal will be chosen at The Admin's discretion.

I came up with this one in the first round. Would be a little more moot now.

Stupid Proposal #2

All unownable squares will be represented on the board by the color gray.

Or any other color really. It's just to make it so you can tell which squares are definetly unowned.

Stupid Proposal #3

At the approval of the Admin, new player may join the game between weeks. The new player starts the game in the same way as each player did at the start of the game.

Basically Proposal #6 from Nomopoly II, this would allow new players into the game.

Stupid Proposal #4

If a player does not take any actions or have any contact with The Admin for 2 weeks, that player is removed from the game.

To remove people who don't do anything. I made another version of this one as well, to make it so people can come back:

Stupid Proposal #4b

If a player does not take any actions or have any contact with The Admin for 2 weeks, that player is marked as Inactive. An Inactive player may take no actions, can not vote or create proposals, nor do they roll the dice and move with the other players. At any time, an inactive player can pay $1,000 to become active again.

The money amount is to ensure players don't become inactive in order to abuse something. Not that it'd be too likely, but.
